Celebrating the Best of BC Children's Books

Welcome to the 23rd annual Children's Reader Choice Award, celebrating the creative work of children's authors and illustrators living in British Columbia.

Created in 2002 by teacher-librarian Karena Ehrenholz, the Chocolate Lily Book Awards celebrates BC authors and illustrators while striving to increase literacy for grade school children in British Columbia, all of Canada and the whole reading world!

We are a registered non-profit reader's choice award.

Our name was inspired by the Chocolate Lily, a flowering plant found growing in British Columbia - but nowhere else in Canada.

It's a rare treat to see this flower blooming in coastal woodland areas in early spring.

The Chocolate Lily Book Award celebrates books by creators from all over British Columbia. We respectfully recognize all the tribal nations of BC from our home base on the unceded territories of the Musqueam, Squamish and Tsleil-Waututh Nations.

We would like to acknowledge the underrepresentation of Indigenous authors, illustrators and stories in our literature and state our intention to address this inequity in the operation of the Chocolate Lily.
